Smart armored vehicles are next-generation ground platforms developed by modern militaries to enhance battlefield dominance, reduce personnel losses, and maximize operational efficiency. Unlike conventional armored vehicles, these systems are equipped with artificial intelligence–supported decision-making mechanisms, advanced sensor networks, autonomous or semi-autonomous driving capabilities, and real-time data sharing. Critical processes such as threat detection, route optimization, and target prioritization can now be carried out with minimal human intervention. This transforms smart armored vehicles from simple transport units into active elements of battlefield management.
From a technical perspective, smart armored vehicles continuously analyze their surroundings using radar, LIDAR, electro-optical sensors, and thermal cameras, while integrated command-and-control systems enable coordinated operations with air defense units, infantry, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Leading defense industry companies such as BAE Systems, Rheinmetall, and Türkiye-based Otokar stand out with the platforms they have developed in this field. Thanks to modular armor structures, active protection systems, and remotely operated weapon stations, smart armored vehicles provide multi-layered defense against asymmetric threats, anti-tank missiles, and unmanned attack elements. In the coming years, fully autonomous mission-capable vehicles are expected to fundamentally reshape ground warfare doctrines.
