BREAKING NEWS
One of the latest innovations of the Turkish defense industry, the GÖKÇERİ aerostat system, has officially begun field operations in security and surveillance missions. Developed by TÜRKPORT Defense Industry following approximately eight years of intensive research and development, the system operates using lighter-than-air gas to maintain a fixed altitude for extended periods. Nicknamed the “flying police station,” GÖKÇERİ has been designed primarily to enhance border security and protect critical facilities such as energy infrastructures and strategic installations.
The system is capable of operating at altitudes ranging from several hundred meters up to 1,500 meters. From these heights, GÖKÇERİ can monitor an area with an approximate 10-kilometer radius, enabling continuous wide-area surveillance. After successfully completing testing phases, the first tactical-class model has reportedly been deployed to safeguard oil fields in the Gabar region of Şırnak. Meanwhile, a larger-bodied variant has been developed to operate at higher altitudes, offering expanded coverage and enhanced surveillance capacity.
Equipped with advanced electro-optical cameras capable of day and night imaging, radar systems, and integrated communication equipment, GÖKÇERİ provides comprehensive situational awareness. The platform can also function as a mobile base station or radio relay when required, strengthening communication networks in remote operational areas. Additionally, efforts are ongoing to integrate new systems that would enable rapid response capabilities against detected threats.
Designed with mobility in mind, the aerostat system is container-based and can be deployed quickly in different regions. A fiber optic line embedded within the tether cable ensures secure and uninterrupted data transmission to the ground control station. With the majority of its sensor infrastructure, control software, and electronic components developed domestically, GÖKÇERİ stands out as a hybrid aerial platform capable of carrying various mission payloads. Experts emphasize that cost-effective, long-endurance aerostat systems like GÖKÇERİ will play a strategic role in Türkiye’s border security strategy and in the protection of critical national assets.
