BREAKING NEWS
The kamikaze unmanned naval vehicle PIRANA KİDA, developed by MKE, successfully conducted an attack on a surface target under Bayraktar TB2 control during the National Unmanned Naval Systems Exercise (TURNAs-2026) held in the Gulf of Antalya and Eastern Mediterranean. During the Distinguished Observer Day event on October 25, the system equipped with a 100-kilogram warhead successfully destroyed its target. This success, following the earlier performance demonstrated in the DENİZKURDU-I Exercise, represents the second successful operation and demonstrates the integration capability between MKE and Baykar.
MKE holds an important position in the Turkish defense industry ecosystem in the naval systems sector. The company possesses extensive experience in munitions and naval platform development and produces high localization-rate products. The PIRANA KİDA project is part of MKE's strategy for developing next-generation naval weapon systems. Kamikaze unmanned naval vehicles serve as asymmetric defense solutions offering low cost and high effectiveness, increasingly integrated into Turkish defense doctrine.
PIRANA KİDA possesses the capability to operate both individually and in swarm formations. Its low radar cross-section design and special coating characteristics reduce detection risk. Vehicles operating in swarm formations, through their maneuvers, distract enemy radar and defense systems, enabling effective target destruction. The system can operate in remote-controlled or autonomous mode thanks to radio frequency (RF) and satellite communication (SATCOM) capabilities, eliminating geographic constraints. With speeds exceeding 40 knots and high maneuverability, it provides advantages in scenarios requiring rapid response. The 100-kilogram warhead and operational range exceeding 200 nautical miles make it suitable for long-distance operations.
Turkish defense industry is taking significant steps in developing autonomous and unmanned systems in the naval domain. Systems like PIRANA KİDA represent next-generation naval weapons that complement traditional naval platforms. These systems offer high cost-effectiveness ratios and can be integrated with naval air defense systems. The project contributes to Turkey's localization objectives in the naval domain and increases national technology utilization. The cooperation between MKE and Baykar represents a successful example of integration between companies from different sectors.
In the global naval defense systems market, kamikaze unmanned naval vehicles are gaining increasing importance. Similar concepts are being incorporated into various nations' naval strategies. PIRANA KİDA demonstrates Turkish capability in this field and possesses qualities that could appeal to potential export markets. The success demonstrated during TURNAs-2026 reveals the system's operational maturity and reliability under field conditions. In the future, the ability of similar systems to conduct coordinated swarm operations will create new possibilities in naval defense doctrine.
