Türkiye has reached another critical milestone in naval technologies with the successful launch of its first indigenous mini submarine. Designed, manufactured and certified with domestic and national resources, the platform recently entered the water for the first time. The test footage, broadcast by TRT Haber, revealed a major step forward for Türkiye’s underwater technology capabilities and signaled the beginning of a new era in the Blue Homeland.

The project is led by DATUM, a company founded in 2013 to develop manned and unmanned mini submarines for military and commercial use. The company strengthened its structure in 2018 through a partnership with Istanbul Technical University. This cooperation brought together academic expertise, engineering knowledge and industrial experience, enabling Türkiye to move forward in the highly demanding field of mini submarine development.

According to Münir Cansın Özden, a faculty member at Istanbul Technical University’s Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, the test conducted on April 14 involved a 12-meter-long manned mini submarine with a displacement of 36 tons. However, during the initial trial, the submarine was launched without personnel on board. The platform successfully executed all commands given during the test, proving the functionality of the system and demonstrating the maturity of the design.

Dr. Özden emphasized that developing a mini submarine is an extremely challenging engineering achievement. He noted that only around 10 countries in the world are capable of developing such platforms. Türkiye’s completion of the design, production and certification process with national resources therefore represents a strategic gain in reducing foreign dependence and strengthening domestic underwater technologies.

One of the most important advantages of DATUM’s mini submarine concept is its high mobility. The platform can be transported to different regions by truck or cargo aircraft and can be launched into the water with a simple crane. This feature provides Türkiye with a flexible force projection capability, allowing mini submarines to be rapidly deployed to various operational areas when required.

The mini submarines are being developed to perform a wide range of missions beyond reconnaissance and observation. With the support of the Presidency of Defence Industries, work continues on platforms capable of carrying out 12 different mission profiles. These include mine laying, mine disposal, torpedo launch, special forces transport, underwater rescue operations and missions targeting critical underwater infrastructure.

The platform is also planned to operate with key national weapon systems developed by the Turkish defence industry. According to Dr. Özden, the mini submarines could launch systems such as the AKYA torpedo and ATMACA missile. They are also expected to deploy the MALAMAN naval mine, rescue personnel trapped in damaged submarines and transport SAT commandos to mission areas. These capabilities would make the mini submarine a compact but highly versatile underwater asset.

Türkiye’s indigenous mini submarine project is expected to add a new dimension to the country’s underwater operational capabilities. Compared to conventional submarines, mini submarines offer a smaller, more mobile and mission-adaptable structure. Their potential use in naval security, special operations, mine warfare, underwater rescue and strategic infrastructure protection makes them valuable platforms for both military and commercial applications.

The successful launch of Türkiye’s first national mini submarine is considered a historic turning point for the country’s naval defence industry. By completing domestic design, production and certification processes, Türkiye has taken an important step toward becoming a stronger and more independent actor in underwater technologies. The achievement is also expected to pave the way for more advanced manned and unmanned underwater platforms in the future.
