The Turkish defense industry has achieved another significant milestone by expanding its naval platform exports to Southeast Asia. The export of armored and armed multi-purpose patrol boats to a country in the region represents the first-ever naval platform sale from Türkiye to Southeast Asia, reinforcing the country’s growing influence in the global defense market.
The project is being carried out through a partnership between Bay Galata, a strong player in international defense procurement, and Kraken Marine Industries, a company specialized in advanced ship design and engineering. Under the agreement, two armored and armed multi-purpose patrol boats will be delivered. This cooperation model reflects Türkiye’s strategic approach of combining supply chain strength with advanced engineering capabilities to introduce high-tech, niche maritime solutions to international markets. The partnership aims not only to successfully complete this initial project but also to strengthen the footprint of Turkish shipbuilding in both the target country and the broader Southeast Asian region.
Traditionally dominated by European and U.S.-origin vessels, the Southeast Asian patrol boat market has now opened its doors to Turkish platforms, largely due to their strong “performance-to-cost” ratio. Turkish-built naval vessels stand out with advanced technical capabilities, integrated electronic and navigation systems, and domestically developed weapon and turret solutions. Furthermore, comprehensive pre- and post-sale services, training programs, and potential local production incentives enhance the competitiveness of Turkish companies in global tenders.
The exported patrol boats are expected to play a critical role in addressing regional maritime security challenges such as piracy, smuggling, and illegal fishing. Their high speed and superior maneuverability enable rapid response operations in narrow waterways, river mouths, and shallow coastal areas. The armored structure ensures personnel protection during operations under fire, while integrated weapon systems transform the platform from a surveillance asset into an active defense and deterrence tool. Designed to operate effectively both in open seas and shallow waters, these vessels will significantly enhance the maritime security capabilities of the purchasing country.
