BREAKING NEWS
The indigenous naval gun Denizhan-76, developed by Makine ve Kimya Endüstrisi (MKE), has officially reached operational readiness after successfully completing its live-fire and factory acceptance tests. As one of the critical domestically developed weapon systems designed for Türkiye’s naval platforms, the sixth Denizhan-76 unit is now set to be integrated into AKDENİZ, the warship that was launched in February and is expected to become Türkiye’s fifth national frigate once completed. This marks another important milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen the indigenous content of its surface combatants and further expand the capabilities of the national naval shipbuilding ecosystem.
Denizhan-76 draws attention not only because it is a domestically produced system, but also due to its technical performance. The naval gun is capable of firing 80 rounds per minute and offers an effective range of up to 16 kilometers, providing warships with a strong engagement capability against surface targets as well as certain aerial threats. Designed to meet the demands of modern naval warfare, the system combines high firepower with a low radar cross-section design. This feature is especially important for reducing the visibility of naval platforms and increasing survivability in contested maritime environments.
Another major strength of Denizhan-76 lies in its multi-role mission profile. The system has been designed to support different engagement scenarios, giving the Turkish Navy greater operational flexibility in ship self-defense and offensive action. It is expected to play a valuable role in close-range air defense, surface warfare, and general ship protection missions. The fact that MKE managed to develop a 76 mm naval gun—an area mastered by only a limited number of countries worldwide—in just 12 months also highlights the level of engineering competence and industrial maturity reached by Türkiye’s defense industry.
The achievement of the Denizhan-76 program has not been limited to domestic use. MKE also exported the system to Indonesia and Romania last year, strengthening Türkiye’s position in the highly competitive global naval weapons market. This export success demonstrates that Denizhan-76 is not only a strategic asset for the Turkish Navy, but also an increasingly attractive product for international customers. With the latest unit set to serve as the main gun aboard AKDENİZ, Türkiye moves one step closer to reducing external dependence in naval armaments while also showcasing the growing design, production, integration, and export power of its domestic defense sector.
