BREAKING NEWS
The NATO Support and Procurement Agency, NSPA, has once again chosen ASELSAN for the procurement of Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) solutions to be used in Man-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS). The agreement will be executed under a three-year framework contract, reinforcing NATO’s focus on interoperability and operational safety across allied forces.
Within the scope of the contract, ASELSAN will provide Mode-5 compliant IFF systems that enable MANPADS operators to rapidly and securely distinguish friendly aircraft from potential threats in the field. This capability is particularly critical in modern battlefields characterized by dense air traffic and complex operational environments, where the risk of fratricide must be minimized.
IFF technology plays a vital role in air defense operations by reducing the likelihood of erroneous engagements. Mode-5, which represents NATO’s highest IFF security standard, employs encrypted authentication methods and enhanced data integrity compared to legacy modes. ASELSAN’s IDENTIFFY product family stands out with its compliance with NATO STANAG 4193 Edition 3 and its full support for cryptographic Mode-5/S operations, expanding the company’s advanced IFF portfolio.
For MANPADS teams operating in highly dynamic scenarios, portable IFF solutions are of particular importance. Systems such as the IdentIFF Mode-5 I-MP portable interrogator provide short-range Mode-5 interrogation capability, offering a practical and reliable solution tailored to man-portable air defense requirements.
NSPA’s framework contracting approach is designed to accelerate procurement processes while ensuring standardization across NATO forces. ASELSAN’s inclusion in previous NSPA-led modular ground-based air defense initiatives highlights its established position within the NATO defense ecosystem. With its rare capability to develop and integrate Mode-5 level encrypted IFF systems for air, land, and naval platforms, ASELSAN continues to strengthen its role as a key contributor to international security and allied defense cooperation.
