BREAKING NEWS
One of the most notable emerging solutions of the Turkish defense industry, the GÖKÇERİ aerostat air vehicle introduces a new operational concept described as a “flying patrol.” Developed by TÜRKPORT Savunma Sanayi, the system utilizes the lifting force of lighter-than-air gases such as helium to remain aloft for extended durations while carrying high-capacity mission payloads. This capability enables persistent surveillance and rapid response over wide areas.
Following an eight-year R&D effort, TÜRKPORT developed the proprietary He-set airtight envelope system, achieving a structure that is 34.5% lighter and 28.6% more leak-resistant than international counterparts. This technological advantage allows GÖKÇERİ to perform equivalent missions with smaller and more efficient airframes. The platform family is categorized into tactical (15 m), operational (21 m), and planned strategic classes.
The tactical-class GÖKÇERİ completed its test and validation phase and was deployed to the Gabar Oil Field in Şırnak for the protection of energy infrastructure. Subsequently, the operational-class aerostat successfully conducted its first real mission flight. Equipped with day/night gimbal cameras, low-altitude radar, electronic warfare systems, radio relay units, base station payloads, hard-kill weapons, and kamikaze drones, the system can conduct surveillance, tracking, and neutralization missions within a 10-kilometer radius.
During its initial operational deployment, GÖKÇERİ demonstrated the ability to monitor low-altitude UAVs and other asymmetric threats while securely transmitting all mission data to the ground control station via fiber-optic cables embedded in its tether. This configuration provides strong protection against electronic warfare attacks and enhances survivability against guided threats.
Looking ahead, TÜRKPORT plans to expand the GÖKÇERİ program with the development of a strategic-class aerostat capable of carrying payloads of up to 680 kilograms. These systems are expected to play a significant role in border security, base protection, and critical facility defense. Production and integration activities are carried out at dedicated facilities in Ankara, while export-oriented initiatives are also progressing.
