AKYA and ORKA are two nationally developed torpedoes that strengthen Türkiye’s independence and capability in underwater warfare. Although both are designed for modern naval threats, they differ significantly in mission roles and technical characteristics. AKYA is a heavyweight torpedo engineered for launch from submarines, whereas ORKA is a lightweight torpedo designed for deployment from helicopters, maritime patrol aircraft and surface vessels. This distinction makes AKYA suitable for long-range, deep-water, high-destructive-power missions, while ORKA stands out with fast reaction capability, agility and multi-platform integration.
Technically, the AKYA Heavyweight Torpedo features a high-explosive warhead, long operational range, fiber-optic guidance and an advanced sonar seeker, making it ideal for engaging enemy submarines and large surface combatants. In contrast, the ORKA Lightweight Torpedo is smaller, faster to deploy and optimized for modern anti-submarine warfare. It uses active/passive acoustic homing and precise target-tracking algorithms. Due to its compatibility with multiple platforms, ORKA enables rapid ASW response in distant maritime zones. Together, these two torpedoes serve complementary missions and significantly expand the Turkish Navy’s underwater strike capability.
