The SD-3001 platform of the Surveyor unmanned surface vehicle, developed by Saildrone, participated in RIMPAC 2026 Exercise in its armed configuration. Pentagon imagery showed the platform integrated with a Lockheed Martin-designed launcher capable of carrying four AGM-179 JAGM (Joint Air-to-Ground Missile) missiles. This deployment represents a significant milestone for the U.S. Navy's hybrid fleet concept, combining manned and unmanned combat assets in the Indo-Pacific region.
Saildrone announced earlier this year that it had invested 50 million dollars in collaboration with Lockheed Martin to integrate a launcher capable of carrying four AGM-179 JAGM missiles. This system substantially enhances the Surveyor platform's strike capabilities. The weaponization of unmanned surface vessels introduces a new dimension to U.S. Navy operational strategy and transforms naval warfare concepts. The Surveyor currently supports U.S. Navy and Coast Guard operations in the Middle East, Pacific, and Caribbean regions.
The AGM-179 JAGM is a multi-sensor missile capable of performing both surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missions. The missile features a 16-kilometer range and is equipped with a tandem shaped-charge and fragmentation warhead. Its seeker features a multi-mode design incorporating a semi-active laser sensor and millimeter-wave radar capable of operating in all weather conditions. These technological characteristics enable JAGM to engage fixed and mobile armored targets, air defense systems, patrol boats, air targets, artillery systems, launchers, radar systems, and command-control centers.
Developed to replace the Cold War-era AGM-114 Hellfire missile, the JAGM features a modernized seeker head that enables future variants to engage targets at extended ranges. This system occupies an important position among next-generation guided munitions developed by the U.S. defense industry. The missile's multi-mission design provides operational flexibility and enhances platform compatibility across diverse scenarios.
The weaponization of Surveyor USV strengthens the role of unmanned systems in U.S. Navy's Indo-Pacific strategy. This solution, developed during Red Sea operations, aims to expand the Navy's options against kamikaze unmanned aerial vehicles. The evolution of naval warfare concepts, combined with increasing operational capabilities of unmanned platforms, creates new tactical and strategic opportunities for maritime forces.
