Anduril Industries completed its first YFQ-44A Fury unmanned combat aircraft at its Arsenal-1 production facility in Pickaway County, Ohio. The aircraft rolled off the production line four months after facility construction began and is designed to operate under the U.S. Air Force's Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program. Anduril announced the factory's construction in January 2025 and planned to begin initial production in July 2026.
Anduril Industries has established itself as a leader in defense technology, specializing in the development of autonomous and semi-autonomous aerial platforms. The company has spent years refining the artificial intelligence and autonomous flight technologies underlying the FQ-44 Fury platform. The Arsenal-1 facility, constructed with a $1 billion investment and spanning approximately 465,000 square meters, is expected to generate 4,000 jobs in the region. The facility possesses an annual production capacity of 150 YFQ-44A aircraft.
The YFQ-44A Fury represents Anduril's adaptation of its FQ-44 Fury autonomous combat aircraft to meet specific U.S. Air Force requirements. The platform operates as an unmanned and semi-autonomous system, with weapons employment decisions remaining under human operator control at all times. The aircraft is capable of carrying AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles and has successfully completed firing tests against simulated targets. The CCA program aims to develop autonomous platforms that can operate alongside manned combat aircraft within a manned-unmanned teaming concept.
From a Turkish defense industry perspective, developments in the U.S. CCA program provide important reference points regarding the design, production, and integration processes for autonomous aerial platforms. Turkish companies such as Baykar and TUSAŞ are working on comparable autonomous UAV/UCAV technologies and developing systems compliant with international standards. The successful production and operational testing of the YFQ-44A provide the sector with valuable insights into the technical and logistical challenges of serial production and operational integration of autonomous combat platforms. The Turkish defense industry continues to monitor such developments to inform its own autonomous platform programs.
U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff General Ken Wilsbach emphasized the strategic importance of the CCA program, noting that autonomous systems integration with manned platforms plays a critical role in achieving air superiority. During the Agile Combat Employment (ACE) exercise conducted at Creech Air Force Base, the YFQ-44A demonstrated coordinated operations with manned aircraft. Contracts awarded to Anduril and General Atomics for the CCA program indicate the U.S. Air Force's intention to field 100-150 aircraft in the initial phase and ultimately deploy 1,000 autonomous platforms. In this context, Arsenal-1's annual production capacity of 150 aircraft plays a critical role in supporting rapid program advancement.
