University–defense cooperation is a strategic innovation model that brings academic knowledge and research capacity together with the practical needs of the defense industry. Through this cooperation, theoretical studies, scientific research, and experimental projects developed at universities are transformed into applicable, domestic, and high value-added defense technologies. Joint efforts in fields such as engineering, artificial intelligence, materials science, cybersecurity, and electronics accelerate defense projects while deepening technological expertise. This structure not only strengthens universities’ research capabilities but also supplies the defense sector with a highly qualified human resource pool.
From a more technical perspective, university–defense cooperation operates through multi-layered mechanisms including joint R&D centers, technoparks, postgraduate programs, project-based funding models, and field testing activities. The close collaboration of academics and defense industry professionals within the same projects accelerates knowledge transfer and enables the commercialization of innovative solutions. In the case of Türkiye, this cooperation model plays a critical role in developing domestic defense technologies, reducing external dependency, and enhancing global competitiveness. Today, university–defense cooperation goes beyond project development, emerging as a core element shaping long-term national defense and technology strategies.
