AKYA is Turkey’s domestically developed heavyweight submarine-launched torpedo, designed to engage both submarines and surface ships with high precision and destructive power. As a 533 mm NATO-standard torpedo, AKYA replaces older foreign-made systems and significantly strengthens Türkiye’s indigenous naval warfare capability. With a range exceeding 50 km and speeds above 45 knots, it delivers effective performance in long-distance, deep-water engagements, enhancing Türkiye’s deterrence at sea through advanced, homegrown technology.
On the technical side, AKYA features an active/passive sonar seeker, fiber-optic wire guidance, wake-homing capability and advanced target-tracking modes for both surface and underwater threats. Its brushless electric motor, high-energy battery system and contra-rotating propellers provide low acoustic signature and sustained high-performance operation. Equipped with a modern insensitive warhead, AKYA produces a powerful underwater shock and “bubble-jet” effect capable of devastating large naval vessels. Following extensive tests throughout the 2010s, its first live warhead test in 2023 successfully destroyed a target ship, marking its transition to operational maturity. With serial production initiated after 2024, AKYA has become the standard heavy torpedo of Turkish submarines, securing a strategic role in Türkiye’s maritime defense doctrine.
