Developed to strengthen Turkey’s multi-layered air defense architecture, the SİPER Long-Range Air and Missile Defense System represents one of the country’s most ambitious national defense projects. Created through the collaboration of ASELSAN, ROKETSAN, and TÜBİTAK SAGE, SİPER aims to provide high-altitude, long-range protection against modern aerial threats by using fully indigenous technologies.
SİPER is designed to intercept a wide variety of airborne targets, including combat aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cruise missiles, and air-to-surface munitions. The system consists of search and fire-control radars, command-and-control units, missile launchers, and communication vehicles, allowing flexible deployment in both fixed bases and mobile field operations.
The first configuration, SİPER Product-1 (Block I), officially entered service at the end of 2024. This version offers a range of over 100 kilometers and an altitude capability exceeding 20 kilometers, supported by an active radar seeker and powerful booster that provides high maneuverability and precision in the terminal phase.
Upcoming versions, Product-2 (Block II) and Product-3 (Block III), aim to push the system’s envelope even further. According to official statements, Product-2 is expected to reach roughly 150 km, while Product-3 may extend up to 180 km, enhancing the defense of strategic facilities and critical infrastructure across wider distances.
SİPER plays a central role in Turkey’s integrated air defense architecture known as the Steel Dome, acting as its long-range pillar. While mid- and short-range systems neutralize lower-altitude threats, SİPER ensures protection against high-altitude, long-range aerial attacks—completing the full defense spectrum.
Technically, the system offers simultaneous multi-target engagement, automatic threat assessment, Identification-Friend-or-Foe (IFF), radar fusion, all-weather operation, and rapid deployment via mobile launch platforms. This enables commanders to establish a resilient, flexible, and layered air defense shield across the country.
An important milestone was reached in 2025 with the SİPER-1D naval test launch, expanding the system’s use to maritime platforms. With this achievement, Turkey joined the small group of nations capable of long-range air defense from both land and sea.
In summary, SİPER stands out as one of Turkey’s most capable defense technologies. With its expanding range, evolving missile family, and seamless integration into the multi-layered defense network, SİPER is set to remain a decisive shield in safeguarding Turkey’s airspace in the years ahead.
