The Reis-Class submarines represent the newest and most advanced submarine fleet of the Turkish Navy. Built under German license based on the Type 214 platform and enhanced with Turkey-specific systems, these submarines feature an Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system that allows them to operate underwater for extended periods without surfacing. This provides exceptional stealth capability and enables deep-water operational endurance. The program includes six submarines in total; the first, TCG Piri Reis (S-330), entered service in August 2024, followed by TCG Hızır Reis (S-331) in November 2025.
From a technical perspective, the Reis class measures approximately 68 meters in length with an underwater displacement close to 2,000 tons. It accommodates around 40 personnel and can reach underwater speeds of about 20 knots. The class is equipped with eight 533 mm torpedo tubes, capable of launching heavy torpedoes, modern anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles, as well as deploying naval mines and multi-role munitions. Compared to older diesel-electric submarines, the Reis class offers significantly improved stealth, longer underwater endurance and advanced weapon-system integration, greatly enhancing the Turkish Navy’s deterrent and operational strike capability. The project also supports national expertise for future indigenous submarine efforts, particularly the MİLDEN program.
