BREAKING NEWS
Turkey announced a significant 229% increase in budget allocation for weapons, ammunition, weapons systems, and other defense equipment procurement for 2027. Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz disclosed this substantial increase during the presentation of the 2027 budget proposal to Parliament's Planning and Budget Commission. Total defense and security allocations, including the Defense Industry Support Fund, will reach 3.45 trillion liras ($69.64 billion), representing 12.7% of the central government budget.
This substantial budget increase reflects Turkey's commitment to strengthening national defense capacity and advancing domestic weapons systems development. In recent years, indigenous defense industry organizations including ASELSAN, ROKETSAN, TUSAŞ, and Baykar have developed systems that are now becoming operationally deployed, with production capacity expansion becoming a key priority. Investments in air defense systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and missile technology represent critical components of Turkey's defense industrial ecosystem, enabling it to meet international standards and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
The successful integration of the Bayraktar TB3 unmanned aerial vehicle with the TCG Anadolu amphibious assault ship, demonstrated through recent NATO exercises, exemplifies Turkey's multi-dimensional defense technology capabilities. These integrated platforms significantly enhance naval forces' aerial surveillance and strike capabilities while increasing domestic production rates. The budget increase aims to support serial production of such systems and expand operational inventory to meet evolving security requirements and operational demands.
Turkey's defense budget increase aligns with NATO standardization efforts and regional deterrence strategy. Similar defense-focused nations have implemented comparable budget increases in response to evolving security environments. Changing geopolitical conditions in Eastern Europe and Mediterranean tensions have intensified Turkey's requirement to strengthen defense capacity. Budget allocations support modernization across land, air, and maritime domains while advancing cyber defense and electronic warfare capabilities to maintain technological edge.
Vice President Yılmaz stated that the 2027 central government budget will total 27.2 trillion liras with projected revenue of 23.4 trillion liras. Defense and security allocations comprising 12.7% of the central budget demonstrate Turkey's strategic prioritization of the defense sector. This budget increase will enable domestic defense industry organizations to accelerate research and development activities, expand production capacity, and pursue development of emerging technologies to strengthen Turkey's defense-industrial base.
