MKE is undertaking a major investment exceeding 1.5 billion dollars to increase its 155mm howitzer ammunition production capacity by 54 times. This strategic initiative aims to strengthen Turkey's defense industrial production capabilities while meeting the ammunition requirements of the Turkish Armed Forces and enhancing the nation's supply security.
MKE is one of Turkey's prominent defense industry organizations with a long history in weapons and ammunition manufacturing. The organization's primary responsibility is to meet all caliber and type ammunition requirements of the Turkish Armed Forces. MKE produces 155mm ammunition for various howitzer systems including FIRTINA, PANTER, GÜRHAN, and ATTİLA. Following this investment initiative, the company's production capacity will increase significantly and manufacturing speed will accelerate substantially.
155mm howitzer ammunition represents a fundamental component of artillery firepower on the modern battlefield. This ammunition provides long-range fire support, enhancing the operational effectiveness of ground forces. MKE's 155mm ammunition product family includes seven different models for high-explosive fragmentation, extended range, and training purposes. Each model features different range and operational characteristics, serving applications from combat operations to personnel marksmanship training. The capacity increase will enable faster and more efficient production of these diverse ammunition types.
Since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine War, global ammunition demand has increased significantly. Prolonged conflicts have highlighted the criticality of artillery ammunition demand and dependency. Turkey is strengthening its own production capacity in response to this global trend, thereby securing strategic independence. MKE's investment decision aligns with Turkey's objectives to increase localization rates in defense industry and develop national production capabilities. Infrastructure modernization efforts at production centers in Kırıkkale, Kırşehir, and Samsun are expected to be completed within this year.
In the global defense industry, 155mm ammunition production occurs within NATO standards across numerous countries. The United States, Germany, France, and Italy maintain significant 155mm ammunition production capacities for their respective armed forces and allies. MKE's capacity expansion positions Turkey more strongly among these global producers while simultaneously increasing export potential. Higher localization rates in ammunition manufacturing stimulate research and development investments and support technological advancement in the defense sector.
