Turkey’s defense industry is marking another major milestone as Otokar accelerates its production efforts for Romania’s massive COBRA II armored vehicle order. Valued at €857 million, the contract represents the largest single armored vehicle export ever secured by Turkey. Under the agreement, Otokar will deliver a total of 1,059 COBRA II 4x4 vehicles in 10 different configurations over a five-year period, highlighting the scale and strategic importance of the project.
According to the contract plan, the first batch of 278 vehicles will be manufactured in Türkiye, while the remaining units will be produced in Romania through a localized production model. Subsystems supplied by Turkish companies will be integrated into the vehicles at Romanian facilities. This arrangement makes the project particularly significant, as it marks the first time COBRA II vehicles will be manufactured abroad, creating a new European production capability for Otokar.
The impact of the contract is already reflected in the company’s operational performance. Otokar’s military vehicle production increased by 128% compared to the same period last year, rising from 94 units to 224. Sales also showed strong growth, reaching 133 units with a 55% increase. Revenues from military platforms nearly doubled as well, climbing from 2.7 billion lira to 5.3 billion lira over nine months. Remarkably, 97% of these revenues were generated through exports, further demonstrating Otokar’s expanding global footprint.
The Romania contract includes a wide range of vehicle variants such as personnel carriers, reconnaissance vehicles, remote-controlled weapon system carriers, anti-tank platforms, anti-tank command vehicles, 120 mm and 81 mm mortar carriers, engineering vehicles, CBRN reconnaissance vehicles and ambulances. This extensive variety underscores the COBRA II’s adaptability and its strong international reputation as a multi-role armored platform. Following delivery, Romania will become the ninth European country to operate Otokar defense systems.
With more than 33,000 military vehicles delivered to over 70 users in more than 40 countries, Otokar stands as one of the leading armored vehicle suppliers within NATO-compliant markets. The Romanian deal not only strengthens Türkiye’s export success but also reinforces Otokar’s position as a global producer capable of high-volume international deliveries and localized manufacturing partnerships.
