South Korea's Ambassador to Ankara, Boo Sukjong, stated following his presentation of credentials to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan that the two countries possess substantial opportunities for defense sector cooperation. The ambassador highlighted next-generation military technologies including KAAN indigenous fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles, and unmanned maritime platforms as priority areas for expanded partnership. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung proposed broadening the South Korea-NATO Defense Industry Partnership 2.0 during the NATO Summit in Ankara to encompass joint research and development, co-production initiatives, and coordinated operations.

Ambassador Boo Sukjong noted that Turkish unmanned aerial vehicle technology meets world-class standards and has achieved exports to numerous countries globally. He emphasized that the defense industries of both nations are complementary in nature, creating opportunities for deeper engagement through joint research initiatives, technology exchange programs, and personnel training frameworks. This partnership model positions both countries to strengthen their respective defense industrial capabilities while contributing meaningfully to regional security architecture.

The KAAN fighter jet represents a defining achievement in Türkiye's indigenous defense platform development. Developed by TUSAŞ, this fifth-generation combat aircraft incorporates advanced avionics systems, superior maneuverability characteristics, and modern weapons integration capabilities. The program demonstrates the technological maturation of Turkish aerospace engineering and reinforces Türkiye's standing in the international defense marketplace. South Korea's emphasis on this platform underscores its recognition as a strategically significant system within regional and global defense frameworks.

Turkish unmanned aerial systems have achieved notable advancement over the past decade. Platforms including Bayraktar TB2 and TB3, manufactured by Baykar, have been exported to more than 30 countries and successfully deployed across multiple operational theaters. Systems developed by TUSAŞ, including ANKA and AKINCI platforms, demonstrate the breadth and capability of the Turkish defense industrial ecosystem. These accomplishments explain the growing interest from technology-focused nations such as South Korea in Turkish defense sector capabilities.

Beyond defense cooperation, economic relations between the two nations continue strengthening. Bilateral trade has exceeded $10 billion annually for three consecutive years. Ambassador Boo Sukjong indicated that both countries aim to expand cooperation into biotechnology, infrastructure development, and nuclear energy sectors. The year 2027 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Türkiye, with joint political, economic, and cultural events planned to commemorate the occasion and strengthen bilateral ties for future decades.
