Türkiye’s defense industry has achieved another milestone in its drive for self-sufficiency with the integration of indigenous engines into armored vehicles. At the 16th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF’23), BMC showcased the VURAN armored vehicle equipped with the locally developed TUNA engine, boasting 400 horsepower. Since 2019, VURAN has been actively used by the Turkish Armed Forces, the General Directorate of Security, and the Gendarmerie General Command, and the new engine configuration further strengthens its operational performance.
According to Mehmet Altınhan, the head of BMC Power, the testing and qualification processes for the TUNA engine are nearing completion. He emphasized that the indigenous power unit offers superior torque and power compared to imported alternatives. This development significantly reduces Türkiye’s dependence on foreign suppliers and enhances the autonomy of its defense industry. A substantial delivery of VURAN vehicles with the new engine is expected to be completed by the end of the year for the Turkish Armed Forces.
VURAN’s capabilities are not limited to domestic use. Altınhan also revealed that the vehicle will be exported to another country this year, adding to the list of nations already operating VURAN. This underlines the vehicle’s growing popularity and Türkiye’s strengthening position in the global defense export market.
By deploying the locally powered VURAN, Turkey not only boosts the operational effectiveness of its security forces but also marks a significant achievement in its broader strategy of defense industry localization and independence. With its advanced protection, high mobility, and reliable power system, VURAN stands out as a versatile solution for both internal security missions and international operations.
