Poland has further expanded its defense capabilities as part of its rapid military modernization following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Under a $2.4 billion agreement with South Korea, 18 K9A1 self-propelled howitzers have been delivered to Poland. According to the Polish Armament Agency, the systems arrived through the port of Gdynia, bringing the total number of K9A1 units in the Polish Armed Forces inventory to 66. This significant reinforcement marks another step in strengthening Poland’s artillery power and deterrence posture.
Beyond the recent delivery, Poland also signed an additional contract with South Korea in December 2023. The $2.6 billion deal covers the purchase of 152 more K9 howitzers, reflecting Poland’s determination to significantly upgrade its long-range strike and defensive capabilities. As a NATO frontline state, Poland continues to position itself as a key regional security player, contributing to the Alliance’s deterrence and collective defense.
The growing defense cooperation between Poland and South Korea has expanded over recent years, covering major contracts that include both K9 Thunder howitzers and K2 Black Panther tanks. Altogether, these agreements amount to more than $12.3 billion, marking a historic milestone in Poland’s defense strategy. The deals are not limited to procurement but also extend to technology transfer and potential joint production, supporting the development of Poland’s domestic defense industry.
Poland’s large-scale modernization program comes at a time when Europe’s security architecture is being reshaped by the war in Ukraine. By investing heavily in advanced artillery and armored systems, Poland aims to secure its borders, bolster NATO’s eastern flank, and solidify its role as a leading military power in the region.
