BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye’s defense industry is taking a critical step toward reducing foreign dependency with the upcoming mass production of the New Altay tank. According to BMC Defense General Manager Mehmet Karaaslan, a high-tech facility under construction in Ankara will serve as the production hub. The New Altay, equipped with an indigenous power group, is expected to provide the Turkish Armed Forces with a domestically developed main battle tank that can compete with leading global platforms.
One of the most significant milestones in the project is the integration of the indigenous engine and transmission system. Karaaslan confirmed that the power group is undergoing a 10,000-kilometer endurance test and will be implemented in mass-produced tanks. This breakthrough not only strengthens Türkiye’s defense autonomy but also eliminates reliance on foreign suppliers for critical components. The production timeline targets early 2025, with the company aiming to avoid any delays in the process.
Alongside the Altay program, other land platforms developed for the Turkish Armed Forces are also drawing attention. The ALTUĞ 8x8 armored vehicle has successfully completed overseas trials, showcasing strong export potential. Meanwhile, the Next-Generation FIRTINA self-propelled howitzer continues to be delivered, enhancing battlefield capabilities with its proven firepower. These projects highlight Türkiye’s focus on strengthening its land forces through indigenous solutions.
The mass production of the New Altay tank marks not only an upgrade in Türkiye’s combat capabilities but also a major leap in its defense industry. The successful deployment of a locally developed engine represents a turning point, affirming Türkiye’s determination to design and produce its own main battle tanks without external dependence.
