NATO announced three major multinational procurement programs during the Heads of State and Government Summit held in Ankara, aiming to strengthen the Alliance’s air power, strategic airlift, intelligence-surveillance-reconnaissance and airborne early warning capabilities. The programs announced by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte are considered concrete steps under the “Made for NATO” approach, which aims to increase the Alliance’s deterrence and defense capacity.

The first procurement announcement was made within the scope of the Multinational Multi Role Tanker Transport Fleet. Allied countries announced that the 10th Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft will soon be delivered to the fleet. With this delivery, NATO will move one step closer to its planned full tanker fleet of 12 aircraft. A330 MRTT platforms will be used for aerial refueling, strategic personnel and cargo transport, and medical evacuation missions. In this way, NATO aims to gain longer-range, more flexible and sustainable operational capability in joint air operations.

The summit also saw the launch of a new multinational cooperation program focused on the Airbus A400M Atlas. The A400M is known as a platform that stands out in missions such as heavy cargo transport, tactical and strategic airlift, takeoff and landing on challenging runways, and rapid force deployment. The combined use of A330 MRTT and A400M capabilities will provide NATO with a more integrated structure in both aerial refueling and strategic air transport. This combination could increase the Alliance’s reaction speed in delivering personnel, ammunition, equipment and humanitarian aid to crisis zones.

The second major procurement program announced focused on NATO’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capacity. Up to five MQ-4C Triton high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles will be added to the Alliance’s inventory. Triton platforms are expected to provide uninterrupted day-and-night surveillance over vast maritime areas and play an important role especially in protecting sea lines of communication and conducting operations in strategic regions such as the Arctic. This capability will help NATO detect threats earlier and strengthen its situational awareness in joint operations.

The third procurement program focused on airborne early warning and control. Allied countries will launch a joint procurement process for up to 10 Saab GlobalEye aircraft to replace the existing Boeing E-3 Sentry fleet. GlobalEye stands out as an advanced platform capable of simultaneously tracking air, land and maritime targets, as well as detecting and classifying drone swarms, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. With these features, the system could become one of NATO’s main assets for airborne early warning, surveillance and command-control missions in the coming years.

The three strategic procurement moves announced by NATO in Ankara are among the important indicators of the Alliance’s effort to adapt to the new security environment. Strengthening aerial refueling, strategic airlift, continuous maritime surveillance and early warning capabilities represents a critical modernization step for Euro-Atlantic security. The prominence of platforms such as the A330 MRTT, A400M, MQ-4C Triton and Saab GlobalEye through joint procurement and usage models shows that NATO will place greater emphasis on multinational defense industry cooperation.
