BREAKING NEWS
STM Defense Technologies' TUNGA-X hunter unmanned aerial vehicle demonstrated operational success during the TURNAs-2026 Unmanned Maritime Systems Exercise conducted by the Turkish Naval Forces Command in the Antalya Gulf and Eastern Mediterranean. The system performed its interception mission against a simulated enemy UAV through radar and image guidance integration, tracking the target in real-time and neutralizing it with a precision strike. This successful test underscores Turkey's advancing capabilities in unmanned air defense systems.
STM, established in 1995, plays a significant role in the Turkish defense sector. The company specializes in advanced technology products including unmanned aerial systems, maritime systems, and electronic warfare solutions. The development of TUNGA-X reflects STM's vision of providing cost-effective solutions against asymmetric air threats. The company's experience and technological infrastructure in this domain form the foundation for the system's successful performance.
TUNGA-X is designed to protect critical infrastructure and military units against low-cost kamikaze UAV threats. The system is a hunter platform capable of reaching speeds of 300 kilometers per hour and operating at ranges up to 25 kilometers. Integrating with UAV detection radars to monitor threats in real-time, the system excels through image processing-based autonomous target tracking and precision strike capabilities. With its vertical takeoff capability requiring no launcher, TUNGA-X can operate from diverse platforms and conduct uninterrupted operations in both day and night conditions.
The Turkish defense industry has achieved significant progress in unmanned aerial systems in recent years. Platforms such as BAYKAR's Bayraktar TB2 and TB3, TUSAŞ's ANKA system, and STM's TUNGA-X hunter UAV demonstrate Turkey's efforts to develop independent capabilities in this critical technology domain. TUNGA-X's successful performance in the exercise reinforces the Turkish defense sector's capacity to produce integrated solutions against asymmetric threats. These systems represent high localization rates and research-intensive projects.
On a global scale, unmanned hunter systems have become an increasingly important component of NATO and allied air defense strategies. Platforms such as the United States' MQ-9B Reaper and Israel's LoyalEye represent international developments in this field. TUNGA-X offers a cost-effective and operationally flexible alternative comparable to such systems. Its success in the exercise could enhance Turkey's defense export potential and regional security contribution.
