China’s leading defense company Norinco has successfully completed the final stage of VT-4 main battle tank deliveries to the Royal Thai Army. According to a statement at the Defense and Security 2023 exhibition in Bangkok, the last batch of 12 tanks was delivered in October to the 6th Cavalry Battalion stationed in Khon Kaen. With this, all 60 VT-4 tanks ordered by Thailand have now entered active service.
For decades, the Thai Army relied on U.S.-made M41, M48, and M60 tanks. However, with the evolving requirements of modern warfare, Thailand sought a more advanced platform and ultimately chose the Chinese VT-4. Known for its powerful firepower and strong protection systems, the VT-4 is equipped with a 125 mm smoothbore gun, a remotely controlled 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun, and a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun, providing significant combat flexibility.
In terms of protection, the VT-4 stands out with dual-layer composite armor and FY-4 explosive reactive armor, offering enhanced resistance against anti-tank threats. Norinco highlights that the tank’s frontal protection is equivalent to 500 mm of homogeneous steel armor. Furthermore, its 1,300 hp engine enables a maximum speed of 70 km/h and an operational range of 500 kilometers, making it both powerful and highly mobile.
This delivery not only strengthens Thailand’s armored forces but also underscores the country’s determination to modernize its military inventory. Norinco’s plans to establish a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) center in Thailand indicate that this cooperation extends beyond procurement, laying the foundation for a long-term strategic partnership.
