BREAKING NEWS
The Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKE) has completed the development of Türkiye’s first variable-caliber sniper rifle, the KN-12, marking a significant advancement for the nation’s small arms capabilities. Introduced during the EFES-2022 Combined Joint Live-Fire Military Exercise, the KN-12 drew considerable attention with its adaptable design and indigenous ammunition integration. MKE General Manager Yasin Akdere stated that the rifle was designed entirely according to the operational needs of the Turkish Armed Forces, with all stages of development carried out using national expertise and resources.
One of the most prominent features of the KN-12 is its ability to switch between two different calibers — 7.62 mm and 8.59 mm. This adaptable configuration will allow sniper teams to adjust the weapon based on mission requirements such as range, penetration power, and operational terrain. With a weight of 7.2 kilograms and a length of approximately 1 meter, the KN-12 provides an optimized balance between portability and shooting stability. The magazine capacity is 5 rounds for the 8.59 mm configuration and 10 rounds for the 7.62 mm configuration, enabling flexible loadout options for varying mission profiles.
According to MKE officials, the KN-12 has successfully passed rigorous NATO-standard qualification tests. These tests included endurance, accuracy, resistance to harsh environmental conditions, vibration, and impact durability evaluations. With these qualifications completed, the rifle is set to enter the Turkish Armed Forces inventory this month, making it Türkiye’s first locally developed variable-caliber sniper rifle officially ready for operational use. With an effective range of up to 1,500 meters, the KN-12 is expected to serve effectively in special forces missions, reconnaissance operations, and precision engagements against high-value targets.
MKE is also advancing efforts toward full independence in ammunition production. The 8.59 mm ammunition designed for the KN-12 has begun mass production at Gazi Fişek using entirely domestic capabilities, ensuring both logistical reliability and strategic autonomy. Akdere emphasized that several friendly and allied nations have shown strong interest in the KN-12, and ongoing discussions are expected to lead to significant export contracts. This potential for international sales not only positions the KN-12 as a competitive global sniper system but also strengthens Türkiye’s expanding defense export portfolio.
