BREAKING NEWS
Russia has strengthened its defense capabilities with the delivery of Shturm-S and Khrizantema-S tank destroyer armored vehicles through the state-owned defense conglomerate ROSTEC. The announcement came shortly after the European Union approved a new sanctions package against Moscow, highlighting Russia’s determination to sustain its military buildup despite economic pressure. Analysts suggest that the deployment of these systems could significantly influence the battlefield dynamics in Ukraine.
The Shturm-S is based on the Soviet-era 9P149 platform but has undergone modernization to counter advanced Western tanks. It is armed with 9M114 Kokon anti-tank guided missiles, also used on the Mi-24 attack helicopters. With an effective range of up to 5 kilometers and a rate of fire of 2 to 4 rounds per minute, the system offers strong anti-armor capabilities, though it lacks the ability to fire while on the move, which limits its tactical flexibility.
The Khrizantema-S, on the other hand, represents a more advanced tank destroyer platform in Russia’s arsenal. Equipped with highly accurate guidance systems and powerful armor-piercing missiles, it is designed to pose a serious threat to NATO’s heavy armored units. According to Russian media reports, the introduction of these systems into active combat operations in Ukraine could alter the course of ongoing clashes and challenge Western-supplied armored vehicles.
Beyond its battlefield significance, this move also carries symbolic weight in the realm of international politics. By showcasing continued defense production and modernization despite sanctions, Moscow projects defiance and resilience. This has reignited global debates about the effectiveness of sanctions and their long-term impact on Russia’s military-industrial complex. The deployment of Shturm-S and Khrizantema-S systems is thus not only a military upgrade but also a strategic signal to both allies and adversaries.
