BREAKING NEWS
Romania is taking a major step in modernizing its air force and aligning more closely with NATO standards. Under a November 2022 agreement with Norway, the country purchased 32 F-16 fighter jets, and the first three aircraft are set to be delivered in the coming days. This acquisition will expand Romania’s existing fleet of 14 F-16s, providing a substantial increase in operational capacity. The $385 million deal also includes spare parts, support equipment, and maintenance services.
The new aircraft will be stationed at Romania’s Fetesti Air Base, marking a key milestone in the country’s transition from Soviet-era hardware to modern NATO-compatible platforms. Romania accelerated its defense modernization following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, seeking to strengthen both deterrence and regional security. Alongside the F-16 purchase, Romania has also signed contracts for fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets and Bayraktar TB2 UAVs.
Romania’s modernization efforts extend to its ground forces as well. The country plans to acquire 300 main battle tanks, with procurement already underway for US-made M1A2 Abrams tanks. Together, these programs are designed to enhance Romania’s defense posture while reinforcing its strategic role within NATO.
Defense analysts note that these investments will not only improve Romania’s air and land combat capabilities but will also increase its significance as a regional security actor in Eastern Europe.
