BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense (MSB) R&D Center made a remarkable debut at the IDEF 2025 International Defense Industry Fair, revealing for the first time the results of nearly twelve years of intensive, low-profile development. The center’s booth attracted major attention with 44 advanced systems, ranging from next-generation munitions to unmanned platforms. Notably, 80% of these products have already passed qualification and certification phases, meaning they are ready for integration into service, while the remaining 20% have completed laboratory testing and are now undergoing field trials.
Among the standout systems were two headline projects: GAZAP and the Penetrator Bomb (NEB). GAZAP, a 2,000-pound MK-series air-dropped munition, contains nearly 10,000 tungsten fragments, dispersing them over a one-kilometer radius, delivering almost three times the lethality of a standard MK-84. Its specialized casing material generates significantly higher blast pressure, ensuring devastating impact across the target zone. The NEB, meanwhile, achieved extraordinary penetration results in trials — advancing approximately 90 meters through rocky terrain and piercing 7 meters of reinforced concrete, far surpassing typical NATO-standard values of around 2.4 meters.
Beyond kinetic weapons, MSB’s R&D portfolio also encompasses unmanned surface vessels, howitzer systems, corner-firing mechanisms, and air-to-air missile projects, marking the ministry’s expanding technological breadth. Officials confirmed ongoing efforts to develop a domestic air-to-air missile capable of rivaling — and potentially outperforming — Western and Eastern counterparts, although exact range specifications remain classified for strategic reasons.
The center’s initiatives are not merely about innovation; they represent a push toward cost efficiency, production autonomy, and resilience against embargo risks. By developing munitions and subsystems locally, Türkiye aims to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains and enhance its defense-industrial sustainability.
IDEF 2025 demonstrated that the MSB R&D Center is now a key force multiplier within Türkiye’s defense ecosystem. Its unveiling signals a new era of technological deterrence, where homegrown innovation directly translates into military and geopolitical leverage. With multiple systems nearing deployment and further projects in the pipeline, the MSB R&D Center is set to become one of the most influential entities shaping Türkiye’s next-generation defense architecture.
