ASELSAN's ASELFLIR-500 electro-optical system has been successfully integrated into the Mwari manned aircraft developed by South Africa's Paramount Aerospace Industries. This integration represents a significant example of Turkish defense technology being applied to international aviation platforms. Through the integration, Mwari's reconnaissance, surveillance, target detection, tracking, and designation capabilities have been substantially enhanced.
ASELSAN is one of Turkey's leading defense electronics companies, possessing extensive expertise in electro-optical and infrared imaging systems. Since its establishment in 1975, the company has developed significant projects in radar, communications, electronic warfare, and optical systems. The ASELFLIR-500 system is the result of this long experience and research and development investments, designed for use on both manned and unmanned aircraft platforms.
The ASELFLIR-500 provides a comprehensive sensor package including a high-resolution medium-wave infrared camera, daytime vision camera, and short-wave infrared imaging channel. The system is equipped with laser rangefinding, laser target designation, target tracking, precision stabilization, and artificial intelligence-supported image processing capabilities. Weighing approximately 54 kilograms, the system's laser target designator and rangefinder have a range of 35 kilometers. With its four-axis gimbal and two-axis optical stabilization structure, it mitigates the effects of aircraft maneuvers and vibrations, enabling continuous target tracking. These technical features allow the system to process imagery from different optical channels, enabling target detection and identification from extended distances.
The Mwari is a manned aircraft developed with a two-person crew configuration and single-engine turboprop design. Its open architecture and plug-and-play integration approach allow it to be configured with different sensors, weapons, and mission systems. The aircraft can carry up to 1,000 kilograms of useful payload on six underwing stations, with a maximum cruise speed of approximately 230 knots, a service ceiling of 21,000 feet, and a mission range of 1,150 nautical miles. Capable of being employed in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, border and coastal security, counterinsurgency and counterterrorism, and precision strike missions, the platform has gained enhanced reconnaissance and target identification capabilities through ASELFLIR-500 integration.
The integration of ASELFLIR-500 into Mwari represents the convergence of Turkey's electro-optical system capabilities with South Africa's aircraft platform development experience. The ASELFLIR-500, which began series production in 2024, has been integrated into various aircraft including Bayraktar TB2 and Bayraktar TB3, and has been exported to more than 20 countries to date. This success demonstrates that Turkish defense industry products are recognized as reliable solutions in the international market. The integration is expected to contribute to ASELSAN's access to new markets and enhance Mwari's export opportunities in different countries.
