BREAKING NEWS
The US Department of Defense has reportedly moved into a new phase of the Golden Dome missile defense initiative launched under President Donald Trump. According to reporting based on sources familiar with the matter, Anduril and Impulse Space have been chosen to work on prototype efforts tied to space-based missile defense capabilities, with Impulse Space supporting Anduril in the effort. While a detailed public Pentagon contract announcement has not yet fully clarified the scope, the reported selection indicates that the program is beginning to take shape around a mix of traditional defense requirements and newer private-sector space technologies.
Golden Dome is intended to form a multilayered defense architecture designed to detect, track, and ultimately counter a wide range of airborne threats to the United States, including ballistic and hypersonic missiles. The initiative traces back to the January 27, 2025 presidential executive order titled “Iron Dome for America,” which called for accelerated work on advanced missile defense systems, including space-based tracking and intercept concepts. Over time, the administration’s public messaging shifted to the name “Golden Dome,” reflecting a broader and more ambitious defensive shield concept rather than a single standalone system.
One of the most debated aspects of the program is the plan to pursue space-based interceptor technology, an idea that has long existed in missile defense discussions but has never matured into an operationally proven capability. That is why the reported work involving Anduril and Impulse Space is significant: it suggests the Pentagon is not merely studying the concept, but is now supporting prototype-level development. At the same time, this does not mean the technology is close to deployment. Rather, it indicates that Golden Dome remains in a high-risk, research-intensive stage where feasibility, integration, and operational value are still being tested. This assessment is an inference based on the reported contractor role and the longstanding technical challenges associated with space-based interception.
Cost is another major source of controversy. Reuters reported in March 2026 that the estimated cost of Golden Dome had risen to around $185 billion, with major firms such as Lockheed Martin, RTX, and Northrop Grumman also involved in broader parts of the program. Meanwhile, the Congressional Budget Office previously warned that large-scale space-based missile defense architectures could require enormous long-term spending, and Brookings has described such concepts as expensive and potentially destabilizing. These concerns have kept the initiative at the center of debate not only in defense circles, but also in broader policy discussions about strategic stability and procurement priorities.
For now, Golden Dome appears to be evolving from a political announcement into a more concrete industrial and technological effort. The emergence of Anduril and Impulse Space in the prototype phase also reflects a wider trend in US defense procurement, where agile technology firms are increasingly competing alongside established prime contractors. In that sense, the program is becoming a test not only of missile defense innovation, but also of how the Pentagon intends to build the next generation of strategic defense systems.
