BREAKING NEWS
A P-72 maritime patrol aircraft assigned to the 301st Naval Air Squadron Command of the Turkish Naval Forces has taken part in NATO’s largest anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercise in the Mediterranean, Dynamic Manta 2026. Developed under the “Meltem 3” project led by the Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB), the P-72 platform is based on the ATR 72-600 airframe and is equipped with advanced mission systems including maritime surveillance radar, acoustic data processing suites, electro-optical sensors, and secure communication systems. These capabilities position the aircraft as a critical airborne surveillance and ASW asset for Türkiye.
The exercise, which began on February 23 off the coast of Sicily, Italy, and runs through March 6, brings together naval, air, and submarine units from 10 allied NATO nations. Operating from Sigonella Air Base near Catania, the Turkish P-72 conducted approximately six-hour sorties over the designated operational area south of Sicily. Prior to takeoff, the crew—comprising pilots, radar operators, acoustic and electronic warfare specialists, and a tactical coordinator under the command of Navy Captain Oğuz Duğdelen—completed detailed mission briefings and system checks.
During the ASW mission, the aircraft operated at altitudes between 2,000 and 5,000 feet to locate the Turkish submarine TCG 1. İnönü participating in the exercise. The P-72 deployed sonar-capable sonobuoys into the exercise area to detect underwater acoustic signatures. By analyzing real-time acoustic data, the crew identified the submarine’s position and subsequently confirmed visual contact with its periscope during a low-altitude pass, successfully completing the assigned mission profile.
Throughout Dynamic Manta 2026, Turkish naval air assets are conducting coordinated anti-submarine operations alongside allied surface ships, submarines, and aircraft, enhancing interoperability within NATO. The Turkish Naval Forces currently operate a fleet of 12 maritime patrol aircraft, including six P-235 and six P-72 platforms. These aircraft perform a wide range of missions such as anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), search and rescue, and counter-smuggling operations—contributing significantly to Türkiye’s maritime security and NATO commitments.
