BREAKING NEWS
One of Türkiye’s key low-altitude air defense assets, the KORKUT Close-In Air Defense System, has reached a new operational milestone with its 8x8 wheeled armored vehicle configuration. First unveiled at Eurosatory 2024, the system drew significant attention after successfully engaging and destroying an aerial target during firing tests conducted while the vehicle was in motion.
Previously inducted into service with its tracked version and achieving notable export success, KORKUT has now been adapted to an 8x8 tactical wheeled platform to enhance mobility and operational flexibility. This configuration allows the system to rapidly deploy across long distances, operate efficiently in diverse terrain conditions, and better support highly mobile units in modern combat environments.
As a key component of Türkiye’s multi-layered integrated air defense architecture, known as the Steel Dome, the KORKUT 140/35 system is optimized to protect mechanized units and mobile elements against low-altitude aerial threats. A standard KORKUT unit consists of three Weapon System Vehicles coordinated by a single Command and Control Vehicle, enabling network-centric and synchronized air defense operations.
Equipped with a twin-barrel 35 mm gun capable of firing up to 1,100 rounds per minute, KORKUT offers an effective engagement range of approximately 4 kilometers. The system employs ATOM 35 mm Airburst Ammunition developed by ASELSAN, significantly increasing lethality against fighter aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, swarm drones, air-to-ground missiles, and certain ballistic threats.
Thanks to its stabilized turret, KORKUT can conduct highly accurate firing even while the carrier vehicle is moving. Target detection is achieved via a three-dimensional search radar, while precise tracking and engagement are ensured through an integrated fire control radar and electro-optical sensors. With these advanced capabilities, the 8x8 KORKUT stands out as a powerful and highly mobile solution against evolving low-altitude air threats on today’s battlefield.
