BREAKING NEWS
Italy is preparing to take a significant step in expanding its carrier-based unmanned aviation capabilities by moving toward the acquisition of the Bayraktar TB3 armed unmanned aerial vehicle, developed by Baykar. According to the reported statements, the platform is expected to be integrated onto the Italian Navy’s aircraft carrier Cavour, a development that could reshape Italy’s naval air operations and give the service a new organic fixed-wing unmanned strike and surveillance capability at sea. The move is being viewed not only as a procurement decision, but also as a sign of growing interest across Europe in operational shipborne unmanned combat aircraft.
The procurement process was publicly confirmed during a presentation to the Italian Senate’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. Italian Navy Commander Admiral Berutti Bergotto stated that the Bayraktar TB3 would be integrated with Cavour and noted that the acquisition would be handled through Leonardo, following the cooperation framework established between Baykar and the Italian defense giant. This arrangement points to a broader industrial model in which the Turkish platform may be offered through the Baykar-Leonardo partnership structure, reinforcing defense-industrial ties between the two countries and potentially easing the system’s integration into Italy’s existing military ecosystem.
Bayraktar TB3 is widely regarded as the naval evolution of the combat-proven Bayraktar TB2, redesigned for operations from short-deck vessels and adapted for maritime environments. The platform stands out with its foldable wings, reinforced landing gear, and design features tailored for deck operations and shipboard storage. These attributes make it particularly suitable for deployment from aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships, and other naval platforms where conventional land-based drones would face operational limitations. With its long endurance and guided munition capability, TB3 is designed to perform intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, targeting, and limited strike missions in contested maritime theaters.
If completed, the acquisition would make Italy the first European customer of the Bayraktar TB3. That would represent a noteworthy milestone for both Baykar and the broader European unmanned systems market. The platform has already drawn attention after Türkiye demonstrated its naval potential through operations from TCG Anadolu, including activities linked to NATO’s Steadfast Dart 2026 exercise. Those demonstrations highlighted TB3’s value in maritime ISR and strike support missions. For Italy, integrating the platform onto Cavour—already home to F-35B short take-off and vertical landing fighter jets—could open the door to a more advanced concept of operations in which manned and unmanned air assets work side by side from the same deck.
The TB3 announcement also aligns with the Italian Navy’s broader effort to expand its unmanned systems inventory. The service already operates systems such as ScanEagle aboard FREMM-class frigates and has also shown interest in newer VTOL unmanned systems with more advanced mission profiles. Adding Bayraktar TB3 to this growing portfolio would provide Italy with an organic fixed-wing unmanned capability capable of persistent surveillance, flexible targeting, and precision engagement from the sea. Although details regarding the number of aircraft to be acquired and the delivery timeline have not yet been disclosed, the intent itself is already emerging as one of the most closely watched naval aviation developments in Europe.
