BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye has reached another important milestone in directed-energy defense technologies. The IŞIK High-Power Laser System, developed by TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, has successfully passed its critical acceptance tests, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s laser-based defense capabilities. With Türkiye accelerating its technological depth in strategic weapon systems, IŞIK stands out as a concrete example of the country’s growing competence in next-generation air and surface defense technologies.
Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır announced the development on his Nsosyal account, highlighting IŞIK’s impressive technical features. Powered by a 20-kilowatt laser source, the system is capable of blinding sensors and optical targets at distances up to 5 kilometers. This capability is essential for neutralizing reconnaissance assets, electro-optical sensors, targeting systems and various unmanned platforms. Additionally, IŞIK can melt or destroy moving targets at ranges up to 1.5 kilometers, enabling cost-effective and virtually silent defense against drones and other airborne threats.
Kacır emphasized that the system is designed for effective use on both land and naval platforms. With its modular structure, IŞIK can be integrated onto armored vehicles, unmanned surface vessels, coastal security units and a variety of fixed installations. Its high rate of indigenous components further enhances Türkiye’s defense independence, ensuring flexibility and sustainability in logistics and maintenance.
High-power laser systems are becoming increasingly attractive globally due to their low operational cost, rapid engagement capability, and stealthy operation. Türkiye’s entry into this domain through IŞIK not only strengthens national defense but also opens the door to potential high-value export opportunities. The engineering expertise accumulated through this program is expected to serve as a foundation for future systems with higher power output, multi-wavelength configurations and integrated air-defense applications.
Minister Kacır stated that IŞIK brings Türkiye one step closer to becoming a “deterrent and effective power” in future laser-based defense technologies. The project represents a strategic leap in Türkiye’s ongoing efforts to expand its indigenous high-technology defense portfolio and enhance competitiveness on the global stage.
