BREAKING NEWS
Piaggio Aerospace, now operating under Baykar’s ownership, has announced the signing of a new agreement with Italy’s Guardia di Finanza (Financial Police) for the delivery of a P.180 Avanti EVO aircraft. The contract includes not only the supply of the aircraft but also initial logistics support and options for future aircraft or related procurements. This marks one of Piaggio’s first major deals since its acquisition by the Turkish defense and aerospace company, signaling a revitalized presence in the European aviation market.
The P.180 Avanti EVO represents the latest evolution of Piaggio’s renowned Avanti line — now upgraded with quieter engines, improved environmental performance, advanced mission systems, and increased operational flexibility. The new aircraft will join Guardia di Finanza’s existing fleet of two P.180 Avanti II planes, enhancing the force’s tactical transport, patrol, and mission readiness capabilities.
The Avanti EVO’s performance profile — high cruise speed, short runway operation capability, and extended range — makes it ideal for anti-smuggling, financial enforcement, border surveillance, and coastal patrol missions. The aircraft’s additional fuel tanks allow for longer patrol endurance, which is especially valuable for operations in the Mediterranean Sea, where the Guardia di Finanza plays a key role in countering illegal trafficking and migrant smuggling.
A redesigned wider door also enables medical evacuation missions, facilitating the transport of stretchers and emergency medical equipment. Combined with its low noise levels and eco-friendly engine technology, the Avanti EVO is well-suited for operations near populated areas and urban regions, enhancing Italy’s ability to conduct humanitarian and security missions with minimal environmental impact.
The deal follows Piaggio Aerospace’s acquisition by Baykar, Turkey’s leading UAV and defense technology company. Analysts view this development as a strategic move that both revives Piaggio’s legacy in the European aviation industry and strengthens Baykar’s foothold in Europe’s defense and aerospace market. Through this acquisition, Baykar gains access to advanced manufacturing infrastructure in Italy, while Piaggio benefits from new investment and innovation capacity from Turkey’s rapidly growing defense ecosystem.
