In the aftermath of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War, Armenia has taken significant steps to rebuild and enhance its defense capabilities. As part of these efforts, Armenia signed an important military agreement with India’s Bharat Forge Kalyani Group. The deal includes the procurement of MArG 155-BR self-propelled howitzers, ATAGS 155mm/L52 towed howitzers, Swathi weapon-locating radars, and Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher systems. This acquisition marks a crucial part of Armenia’s broader armament program aimed at addressing its military shortcomings and strengthening its strategic position.
The MArG 155-BR self-propelled howitzer stands out with its ability to fire NATO-standard 155mm shells and its 18-ton armored platform. Known for high mobility and rapid redeployment capabilities, this artillery system is expected to significantly enhance Armenia’s ground force effectiveness. Its modern design provides the Armenian army with improved flexibility in dynamic battlefield conditions.
The Swathi weapon-locating radar system, also included in the deal, offers Armenia the ability to detect and track enemy artillery fire, providing a critical defensive advantage. Additionally, the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher, capable of delivering heavy firepower over wide areas in a short time, is seen as a game-changer in strengthening Armenia’s deterrence capabilities.
Analysts suggest that these acquisitions will not only reinforce Armenia’s military strength but could also shift the regional security dynamics in the South Caucasus. The deal underlines Armenia’s determination to modernize its armed forces and signals a deepening defense partnership between Yerevan and New Delhi.
