BREAKING NEWS
KIZILELMA, the indigenous unmanned combat aircraft developed by Baykar, continues to mark groundbreaking achievements as part of Turkey’s expanding defense aviation capabilities. After undergoing numerous test phases over the past months, the platform has recently accelerated its testing schedule, demonstrating a significant leap in maturity. Each successful trial brings Turkey one step closer to integrating a fully indigenous radar system and domestically produced air-to-air missiles into an unmanned fighter platform.
One of the program’s most notable steps came with the first successful flight using TOYGUN, a low-observable electro-optical targeting system developed with national resources. This milestone positioned Turkey as the first country in the world to operate such a system on an unmanned fighter aircraft. Shortly after, KIZILELMA executed another critical test flight equipped with ASELSAN’s MURAD AESA radar and successfully launched the TÜBİTAK SAGE-developed Gökdoğan air-to-air missile. The harmony between the radar and the missile signifies an important advancement in the future of unmanned aerial warfare.
Another major highlight was the joint test flight carried out with Turkish F-16s. During simulation-based air combat scenarios, KIZILELMA successfully locked onto the F-16s and virtually neutralized them, showcasing its advanced engagement capabilities. When the internal weapon bays—designed to enhance low observability—become fully operational, this capability is expected to reach an even higher level.
Experts emphasize that these tests hold immense value not only for KIZILELMA but also for Turkey’s National Combat Aircraft, KAAN. Data gathered from KIZILELMA’s flights—covering radar behavior, missile integration, and system interactions—will significantly accelerate KAAN’s development timeline and contribute to its system maturity. This parallel advancement represents a major technological leap in both manned and unmanned fighter aircraft projects.
With its extended endurance, low operational cost, and advanced maneuverability, KIZILELMA is poised to transform mission concepts in regions such as the Aegean. Equipped with indigenous radar technology and national air-to-air missiles, the platform offers Turkey both economic and operational advantages, solidifying its place as a game-changing asset in the country’s air power.
