BREAKING NEWS
The U.S. Marine Corps is advancing its evaluation of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to enhance battlefield logistics and firepower support. In this context, the Arion-SMET robotic mule, developed by South Korea’s defense company Hanwha, underwent rigorous field testing at the Marine Corps Training Area Bellows in Hawaii. The trials, conducted in December 2023, involved the 3rd Littoral Logistics Battalion and U.S. Army researchers, focusing on the vehicle’s performance across challenging terrains, including soft sand, clay, and rugged paths.
Arion-SMET is designed with a 1,200-pound payload capacity, 62-mile operational range, and a top speed of 27 mph. Beyond transport capabilities, it offers remote operation, waypoint navigation, soldier-following functions, and reconnaissance support. These features make it a versatile platform capable of both carrying heavy equipment and contributing to tactical missions.
Meanwhile, General Dynamics is building the SMET platforms for the U.S. Army, aiming to deliver 675 units by October 2024 under a $249 million contract signed in 2020. Although the U.S. Marines have not yet officially fielded a UGV, Marine Corps Systems Command spokesperson Morgan Blackstock noted that requirements for future applications are under review.
Experts emphasize that modern conflicts highlight the necessity of mobile logistics and flexible combat platforms. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has demonstrated how vulnerable large, easily detectable supply systems can be to enemy strikes. Against this backdrop, compact and multifunctional UGVs like Arion-SMET, capable of carrying weapons or sensors, are becoming increasingly vital. These tests represent an important step in shaping the future role of robotic vehicles on the battlefield.
