BREAKING NEWS
The US Marine Corps' III Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF), stationed in Japan, has received the Iron Dome air defense system. Designated as the Mid-Range Intercept Capability (MRIC), this system has been deployed to counter cruise missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) threats that could emerge during a potential conflict with China in the Western Pacific. The system underwent installation testing in Guam as part of the Valiant Shield exercise and was inspected on-site by Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of US Indo-Pacific Forces.
The MRIC system provides a decisive competitive advantage in mobile air defense, delivering rapid protection wherever needed. Armed with 20 interceptor missiles each, trailers carrying the system can engage targets at ranges between 3 and 70 kilometers. The system is designed to prevent critical assets from remaining vulnerable to enemy air and missile threats. The US Marine Corps has significantly enhanced its operational capabilities with this platform, which represents the longest-range air defense system the service has possessed since the Cold War era.
The US Marine Corps retired its previous medium-range air defense system in the 1990s and has relied on Stinger shoulder-fired air defense systems for many years. However, emerging air and missile threats from China necessitated a more capable system. In 2023, the Marine Corps selected the Israeli-manufactured Iron Dome, which has been successfully employed for years against intensive rocket and missile attacks on Israel. This selection reflects the system's proven effectiveness and operational reliability.
According to the updated Force Design plan, the service intends to fully equip three MRIC batteries by 2028. The Okinawa-based III MEF is located within range of numerous Chinese air bases and missile batteries capable of striking the Japanese island. MRIC is one of several air defense and radar systems procured under the Force Design initiative to protect these forces against various air threats. The system will enhance the operational effectiveness of the Marine Corps operating advanced sensors and anti-ship missiles deployed across strategic islands.
General Roger Turner, Commander of III MEF, stated in a press release that MRIC strengthens their ability to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with allies by enhancing defensive capabilities. These technological advances demonstrate that III MEF remains ready for crisis response and can answer the call. The system's deployment represents a critical component of US defense strategy in the Pacific region and plays a vital role in maintaining regional stability.
