The U.S. Air Force’s latest stealth bomber, the B-21 Raider, has successfully completed its second test flight, marking another milestone in the development of the advanced aircraft. The flight took place on January 17 at Edwards Air Force Base in California, and unlike the first flight from Palmdale to Edwards in November, this time it was conducted publicly, showcasing the program’s progress.
Built by Northrop Grumman, the B-21 Raider is one of six test aircraft currently in production and evaluation. According to Air Force officials, these test flights are intended to enhance the strategic deterrence posture of the U.S. and its allies. With its long-range and deep-penetration strike capabilities, the Raider is expected to play a critical role in future conflict scenarios.
The 420th Test Wing at Edwards AFB, which previously tested the B-2 Spirit, has been reactivated since 2019 to oversee the Raider program. Northrop Grumman has also indicated that it expects to receive a low-rate initial production contract for the B-21 in the near future.
The Air Force plans to field the first operational B-21s by the mid-2020s, with Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota designated as the bomber’s first main operating base. The service ultimately intends to acquire at least 100 B-21 Raiders, viewing the aircraft as a cornerstone for modernizing its bomber fleet. Analysts note that the Raider will be especially critical in reshaping U.S. Indo-Pacific operations and serving as a key platform in potential contingencies involving China.
