The United Kingdom has taken a significant step to enhance Ukraine’s defensive and deterrence capabilities by launching a new ballistic missile production initiative. According to UK Defence Secretary John Healey, the project involves the development of a new ballistic missile system named “Nightfall,” capable of striking targets at a range of up to 500 kilometers while carrying a 200-kilogram warhead. This extended range is expected to provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with the ability to engage critical Russian military and logistical targets far behind the front lines.
One of the most notable features of the Nightfall missile system is its ability to be launched rapidly from mobile ground vehicles. This capability is intended to limit the reaction time of Russian air defense systems, increasing the likelihood of successful strikes. In the initial phase, three missiles will be produced for testing and evaluation purposes. To support this stage, the UK Ministry of Defence plans to sign contracts worth approximately £9 million with domestic defense industry companies.
During the announcement of the project, Defence Secretary Healey was reportedly in western Ukraine near the city of Lviv when Russia carried out a missile and drone attack. The coordinated strike, involving Oreshnik-type missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, resulted in the deaths of four civilians in Kyiv. Following the attack, Healey reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supplying Ukraine with advanced military technologies to counter ongoing threats.
In addition to the Nightfall missile program, the UK also plans to begin production of next-generation “Octopus” unmanned aerial systems designed to intercept Russian missiles and drones. These systems are expected to significantly strengthen Ukraine’s air defense network. Meanwhile, the UK and France have announced plans to deploy peacekeeping forces to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, with the United States overseeing the process. Healey emphasized that the “Coalition of the Willing,” supported by 39 countries, will continue to provide long-term military and political support to Ukraine.
