BREAKING NEWS
The UK Ministry of Defence has officially announced the launch of a major modernization program for the Royal Air Force’s Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft, one of the cornerstones of the country’s air power. Under the program, a contract worth £453 million (approximately $608 million) has been signed to upgrade the radar systems of the aircraft, ensuring long-term operational superiority against evolving aerial threats.
The agreement was concluded with UK-based defense giant BAE Systems and Italy-based aerospace and electronics firm Leonardo. As part of the contract, the Eurofighter Typhoon fleet will be equipped with the advanced ECRS Mk2 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar. This next-generation radar is designed to provide superior detection range, simultaneous multi-target tracking, enhanced electronic warfare capabilities, and improved precision in both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the strategic importance of the modernization effort, stating that threats to the UK and NATO airspace are increasing. He highlighted ongoing Russian drone activity targeting Ukraine and repeated violations of NATO airspace, noting that the ECRS Mk2 radar will play a critical role in safeguarding the United Kingdom for decades to come.
Beyond its operational impact, the radar upgrade program is also expected to deliver substantial economic benefits. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that more than 1,500 highly skilled jobs will be sustained through the project. The contract follows a separate £205 million agreement signed earlier with QinetiQ, which will provide engineering and technical support services for the Typhoon fleet. Together, these investments underline the UK government’s commitment to strengthening its defense industrial base.
Meanwhile, international interest in the Eurofighter platform continues to grow. Türkiye is reportedly progressing with plans to acquire Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft from the inventories of Qatar and Oman, with pilot training already underway and initial deliveries expected in the near term. These developments further demonstrate the Eurofighter Typhoon’s enduring relevance and global appeal as a modern multirole combat aircraft.
