BREAKING NEWS
Defense industry cooperation between Türkiye and Saudi Arabia has gained significant momentum in recent months, with major strategic projects now approaching a decisive phase. As one of the leading actors of Türkiye’s defense sector, TUSAŞ is positioning itself at the center of this growing partnership by offering both advanced aerial platforms and new-generation unmanned systems.
Speaking at the World Defense Show 2026 held in Riyadh, TUSAŞ CEO Mehmet Demiroğlu underlined that negotiations regarding the fifth-generation KAAN fighter jet and the GÖKBEY utility helicopter have reached an advanced level. According to Demiroğlu, discussions are not limited to direct procurement but also include the establishment of a local production line in Saudi Arabia. For such an industrial setup to be viable, TUSAŞ estimates that at least 50 units of KAAN and 50 units of GÖKBEY would be required, a model that Saudi authorities are reportedly considering seriously.
Demiroğlu emphasized that the final structure of the agreement will be shaped by Saudi Arabia’s operational needs and long-term vision. He also noted that concrete progress and official decisions are expected within the year, signaling a potential breakthrough in bilateral defense cooperation.
Beyond manned platforms, TUSAŞ is also preparing to showcase major developments in unmanned systems. In early May, the company plans to unveil a new kamikaze unmanned aerial vehicle that surpasses the capabilities of the existing Şimşek platform. This new loitering munition is expected to feature enhanced precision, network-centric operations, and compatibility with swarm concepts and manned-unmanned teaming.
Additionally, TUSAŞ will introduce new helicopter projects—both manned and unmanned—during the SAHA Istanbul defense exhibition. These efforts align with Türkiye’s broader vision of integrating platforms such as KAAN and ANKA-3 into a fully connected combat ecosystem, enabling coordinated missions, target engagement, and advanced command-and-control capabilities before KAAN officially enters service.
