BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye’s state-owned defense manufacturer Makine ve Kimya Endüstrisi AŞ (MKE) has achieved another milestone in its expanding defense export portfolio. The company has officially delivered its BORAN 105 mm light towed howitzer to North Macedonia, marking Türkiye’s first artillery export to the European continent.
According to MKE’s statement, the delivery took place on June 6, 2025, under a contract signed with the Ministry of Defense of North Macedonia on December 21, 2022. The agreement included six BORAN howitzers and their associated ammunition. Previously exported to Bangladesh, the BORAN has now made its European debut, underscoring its reliability, performance, and suitability for modern battlefield conditions.
The BORAN system, developed entirely with Turkish engineering and national resources, is designed for rapid deployment, high mobility, and precision firepower. It features a 105 mm / 30-caliber barrel and weighs 1,745 kilograms with its fire control system included. Capable of reaching a 17-kilometer range at sea level, BORAN can be made ready to fire in under one minute. Equipped with a GPS-assisted fire control system, panoramic sight, and fast emplacement capability, it offers a modern, lightweight alternative to conventional artillery systems.
Originally designed for airborne and commando units, BORAN has proven its effectiveness within the Turkish Armed Forces in internal security and air-supported operations. Its compact structure allows for air, land, and sea transport, making it ideal for rapid-response missions and operations in challenging terrain.
With this delivery, Türkiye not only expands its defense industry exports but also strengthens its foothold in the European defense market. The sale to North Macedonia highlights growing interest in Türkiye’s indigenous and mobile artillery systems, valued for their cost-effectiveness and operational flexibility. Defense experts suggest that BORAN’s presence in Europe could pave the way for future regional orders and joint production initiatives, further enhancing Türkiye’s role as a global defense supplier.
