BREAKING NEWS
The Turkish Ministry of National Defense (MoD) has issued a strong statement regarding the Greek Cypriot Administration (GKRY) and its recently declared NAVTEX notice concerning drilling operations near Turkey’s continental shelf. Ministry sources confirmed that the Cypriot NAVTEX area lies 11.5 nautical miles (about 22 km) south of Turkey’s maritime jurisdiction and emphasized that the drilling vessel’s operations, which began on January 19, 2025, are being closely monitored by Turkish authorities. The MoD asserted that Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will continue to protect their rights and interests decisively, and any attempt to violate Turkey’s continental shelf will be immediately countered on the ground.
The Ministry underscored that the Turkish government evaluates all aspects of such developments and acts at the appropriate time with necessary measures. This statement comes amid heightened tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, reflecting Ankara’s readiness to respond both diplomatically and operationally to unilateral drilling or exploration initiatives near its continental shelf. Turkish defense officials also stated that technical assessments of the NAVTEX area are ongoing and that the situation remains under continuous observation.
During the same press briefing, the MoD addressed several domestic topics. Responding to recent rumors about “military exemption without basic training,” officials clarified that according to Article 9 of the Turkish Military Service Law No. 7179, those benefiting from the paid military service program must still complete one month of basic training. The Ministry confirmed that there are no ongoing plans to abolish this training period, rejecting claims of a so-called “barracks-free paid service.”
Regarding Turkey’s overseas military operations, defense sources reaffirmed that the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) continues its mission in Syria, with coordination efforts aimed at strengthening the Syrian security apparatus. On Iraq’s northern front, particularly within the Claw-Lock Operation (Pençe-Kilit) zone, Turkish troops continue search-and-clear missions, neutralizing mines, IEDs, caves, and hideouts used by terrorist groups. Officials emphasized that the fight against terrorism will continue resolutely until the last terrorist is neutralized, while also noting that these operations are carried out in coordination with Iraqi authorities to ensure regional stability and security.
