BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye has taken another major step forward in its national missile programs with the successful test firing of the SOM-J, a compact air-launched cruise missile developed by TÜBİTAK Defense Industries Research and Development Institute (TÜBİTAK SAGE). Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır announced the achievement, emphasizing that SOM-J once again showcased Türkiye’s advanced engineering capabilities and growing technological independence.
During the test, SOM-J demonstrated several critical capabilities expected from modern cruise missiles. It executed challenging evasive maneuvers designed to avoid enemy air-defense and radar systems while maintaining extremely low-altitude flight over the sea surface. The missile also achieved full engagement against its designated surface target and proved its post-launch controllability — one of the advanced guidance features that enhances operational flexibility and precision.
The SOM-J is being developed as a next-generation, low-observable, lightweight cruise missile optimized for integration with various Turkish air platforms, including unmanned combat aircraft and modern fighter jets. Its design focuses on extended stand-off range, reduced radar signature and high-accuracy terminal guidance, enabling air assets to engage targets from safe distances even in high-threat environments.
Minister Kacır highlighted the strategic importance of the successful test, stating: “Every signature we leave in the sky is a step toward a fully independent and leading Türkiye of tomorrow.” His remarks underline the symbolic and strategic value of the SOM-J program, which strengthens the country’s defense autonomy while elevating its deterrence capabilities.
The SOM-J is part of the broader SOM missile family developed by TÜBİTAK SAGE, which already includes long-range cruise missile variants used by the Turkish Armed Forces. The successful completion of this latest test strengthens SOM-J’s position as a key asset in Türkiye’s expanding precision-strike ecosystem and marks an important milestone on the path toward serial production and operational deployment.
