Pakistan and Turkey are reinforcing their long-standing strategic partnership with new large-scale defense collaborations unveiled during the 13th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF 2017) in Istanbul. Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Pakistan’s Minister for Industries and Production Tenvir Hussain emphasized that both nations are on the verge of implementing major defense projects that will significantly strengthen joint military capabilities. Hussain stated that the initiatives to be announced during the fair reflect the deepening trust and cooperation between the two countries.
One of the key agreements to be signed at IDEF 2017 is the sale of 52 Pakistan-manufactured trainer aircraft to the Turkish Air Force. Hussain also noted that discussions regarding Turkey’s acquisition of the T129 ATAK attack helicopter are actively progressing. Additionally, joint efforts toward a next-generation fighter aircraft remain on the agenda. According to Hussain, Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) will provide integration support in the first phase, while the second phase will involve cooperation with the UK Royal Air Force—an area in which Pakistan plans to act as a project partner. He further highlighted President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s vision of Turkey producing its own national fighter jet within the next decade, a goal Pakistan stands ready to support.
Cooperation in naval defense platforms is also expanding. Hussain confirmed that Turkey and Pakistan plan to jointly produce MİLGEM corvettes, with some vessels being built at Karachi Shipyard and others in Turkish shipyards. This initiative marks one of the most extensive naval partnerships between the two nations and underscores their shared commitment to technological development in maritime defense. Parallel to these efforts, Pakistan’s NRTC, HIT, and POF continue to collaborate with Turkish defense giants such as Aselsan and MKEK on radio systems, weapons production, and armored platforms.
Hussain also recalled the recent joint construction of a 17,000-ton fuel tanker for the Pakistan Navy at Karachi Shipyard in partnership with Turkey—an example of the longstanding industrial synergy between the two countries. Emphasizing the political and strategic alignment between Islamabad and Ankara, Hussain stated that Pakistan has always stood by Turkey in regional and international matters, and Turkey has consistently shown the same support. The close relationship between President Erdoğan and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif continues to elevate bilateral cooperation to new heights.
With multiple joint projects underway—from aircraft and corvettes to communication systems and weapon manufacturing—IDEF 2017 marks a pivotal moment in the deepening defense partnership between Turkey and Pakistan.
