Thales and Renault Group jointly unveiled the 4 TROOP tactical vehicle prototype at EUROSATORY 2026. The vehicle is a new variant of the VCMR (Véhicule de Combat Modulaire Rapide) platform, designed to meet current operational requirements of ground forces. Renault Group's industrial and technological expertise combined with Thales' advanced communications and connectivity solutions form the foundation of this vehicle.
Renault Group brings over a century of automotive experience and has recently undertaken significant defense sector projects. The company's electronic architecture and vehicle design expertise play a critical role in military platform development. Thales, one of France's leading defense electronics companies, is globally recognized for radar, communications, and digital command systems. The partnership between these two firms targets rapid production and cost optimization in developing next-generation tactical vehicles.
The 4 TROOP is a 4×4 configuration vehicle equipped with hybrid power transmission. It combines covert operation capability with extended range performance. Through Thales' dual-technology systems, the vehicle performs decision support, reconnaissance, unit coordination, escort, logistics support, facility surveillance, and UAV/UGV coordination tasks. The vehicle is equipped with integrated UAV systems, advanced sensors, hybrid secure communication solutions, and artificial intelligence-enabled decision support systems. These features enhance ground forces' field perception, response times, and operational efficiency.
From a Turkish defense industry perspective, tactical vehicle development and integrated UAV/UGV systems hold strategic importance. Domestic companies such as FNSS, OTOKAR, and BMC are working on similar light tactical vehicle platforms. The 4 TROOP's hybrid propulsion and V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capability—enabling power supply to electrical equipment in the field—increase energy autonomy and reduce logistical footprint. Thales' Combat Digital Platform transforms vehicles into fully equipped mobile command centers. Such integrated systems provide NATO-standard operational coordination and facilitate interoperability with allies.
In the global defense sector, digitalization of tactical vehicle platforms and UAV integration are rapidly expanding. NATO nations are undertaking similar projects to strengthen ground forces' remote sensing and decision support capabilities. Renault Group's after-sales support and maintenance services ensure logistical efficiency throughout vehicle service life. The prototype is designed for rapid serial production and can be configured for various operational mission profiles. The integration of electric and hybrid technologies into military vehicles will remain a key trend in the defense sector over the coming decade.
