The HASAT 2025 event, hosted by Teknopark Istanbul, continues to bring together technology startups with investors, public institutions, and key stakeholders of the defense industry. On the second day of the event, the panel titled “The Contributions of Technology Entrepreneurship to the Defense Industry” offered significant insights into the future of the sector. The panel was moderated by Bilal Topçu, General Manager of the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation (TSKGV).
Speaking at the panel, HAVELSAN CEO Mehmet Akif Nacar emphasized that entrepreneurship plays a critical role in enriching the defense industry with innovative solutions and ensuring sustainable technology production. He stated that HAVELSAN actively supports acceleration and investment programs, particularly in artificial intelligence, in cooperation with TÜBİTAK. Nacar noted that selected startups receive mentorship and strategic guidance, enabling them to grow into strong technology companies. He also highlighted the development of MAIN, Türkiye’s first large-scale Turkish language, image, and voice model, which continues to evolve and serves both defense and civilian sectors.
TEI Chairman and CEO Prof. Dr. Mahmut Faruk Akşit underlined that the aviation and defense sectors operate under strict regulations, which also create unique opportunities due to relatively lower competition. He explained that artificial intelligence significantly enhances engineering processes, especially in predictive maintenance, where data collected from sensors allows systems to warn pilots before failures occur. Akşit also stressed the importance of a well-trained and skilled workforce, particularly qualified technical personnel.
BMC POWER CEO Mustafa Kaval focused on domestic powertrain projects, stating that major progress has been made in developing the indigenous engine and power group for the ALTAY main battle tank. He noted that testing processes are ongoing and that ALTAY will soon be integrated with its national power group. Kaval also added that the company has successfully adapted the tank engine for maritime use and plans to utilize it as an auxiliary engine in the MİLGEM naval platforms.
Altınay Technology Group Chairman Hakan Altınay shared his entrepreneurial journey and emphasized the importance of strategic thinking. He described strategy as a combination of knowledge, goal setting, and determination. Altınay stated that compared to the 1990s, today’s entrepreneurs benefit from extensive support mechanisms, especially under the National Technology Initiative. He highlighted that Türkiye now possesses all the necessary infrastructure for technology production, and what is needed most is young entrepreneurs who believe in collaboration and this national vision.
As part of the event, a signing ceremony was also held between Teknopark Istanbul and HAVELSAN for the Jet Cube Acceleration Program. The program aims to strengthen the technical capabilities and business models of early-stage startups by providing access to strong infrastructure, expert mentors, and opportunities to meet investors and potential customers.
